1 Chronicles 28:4-7 Yet the LORD, the God of Israel, chose me... to be king over Israel forever. He chose Judah as leader, and from my father's sons he was pleased to make me king over all Israel. Of all my sons... he has chosen my son Solomon to sit on the throne... over Israel. He said to me: 'Solomon your son is the one who will build my house and my courts, for I have chosen him to be my son, and I will be his father. I will establish his kingdom forever if he is unswerving in carrying out my commands and laws, as is being done at this time.'
1 Kings 2:1-4 When the time drew near for David to die, he gave a charge to Solomon his son. "I am about to go the way of all the earth," he said. "So be strong, act like a man, and observe what the LORD your God requires: Walk in obedience to him, and keep his decrees and commands, his laws and regulations, as written in the Law of Moses. Do this so that you may prosper in all you do and wherever you go and that the LORD may keep his promise to me: 'If your descendants watch how they live, and if they walk faithfully before me with all their heart and soul, you will never fail to have a successor on the throne of Israel.'"
2 Chronicles 7:17-20 [The Lord appeared to Solomon and said] "As for you, if you walk before me faithfully as David your father did, and do all I command, and observe my decrees and laws, I will establish your royal throne, as I covenanted with David your father when I said, 'You shall never fail to have a successor to rule over Israel.' But if you turn away and forsake the decrees and commands I have given you and go off to serve other gods and worship them, then I will uproot Israel from my land, which I have given them, and will reject this temple I have consecrated for my Name."
The promise is also here in Psalm 89:20-37 and Psalm 132:10-12,17-18
The point I am making here is for a descendant to reign on David's throne and fulfill the promise to David a provision must be met–obedience. Obedience to the law established through Moses.
1 Kings 11:9-11 The LORD became angry with Solomon because his heart had turned away from the LORD.... Solomon did not keep the LORD's command. So the LORD said to Solomon, "Since this is your attitude and you have not kept my covenant and my decrees, which I commanded you, I will most certainly tear the kingdom away from you and give it to one of your subordinates.
Solomon broke God's law and then began the downward spiral of Israel's kings. Not only was the Davidic line of Kings brought to an end, but the kingdom of Israel was divided and both kingdoms went into exile during their history. One of those kingdoms eventually came back–Judah and Benjamin, who are the Jews–the other ten tribes never came back and were scattered among the gentiles.
- Jeremiah 33:14-18 "'The days are coming,' declares the LORD, 'when I will fulfill the good promise I made to the people of Israel and Judah.
"'In those days and at that time I will make a righteous Branch sprout from David's line; he will do what is just and right in the land. In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will live in safety. This is the name by which it will be called: The LORD Our Righteous Savior.'
For this is what the LORD says: 'David will never fail to have a man to sit on the throne of Israel, nor will the Levitical priests ever fail to have a man to stand before me continually to offer burnt offerings, to burn grain offerings and to present sacrifices.'"
So the fulfillment then is this Righteous Branch, which we know is Jesus the Messiah. And for him to be able to fulfill the promise and reign on David's throne, he must restore the covenant that Solomon broke. Solomon, David's son, lost the kingdom and broke the covenant for his disobedience, but Jesus, the Son David (Mt 1:1), restored it by his obedience to the law and that is why the kingdom will be restored again when he comes in the Messianic Age (Millennial Reign).
If Jesus had been a law breaker, not only is he unable to fulfill the covenant and reign on David's throne, but more importantly, he would not be able to be the perfect spotless sacrifice for our sins (Ex. 12:4-5, 1Cor 5:7, 1Pt 1:19, 1Pt 2:22, 2Cor 5:21). HE MUST KEEP THE LAW TO FULFILL THE DAVIDIC COVENANT AND TO BE THE ATONING SACRIFICE. Even a Jesus that adds or takes away from the law is guilty of breaking it (Dt 12:32)! Simply put, if Jesus came to do away with the law, he cannot be your King according to the Scripture. And if Jesus broke the law, he is not qualified to save you from your sin. We need to get to know him better—for who he really is, not what we've heard others say about him.
For sin is breaking the Law of God. - 1 John 3:4
